W anglojęzycznych czasopismach z zakresu nauk empirycznych (fizyki, medycyny, socjologii i innych) nieczęsto ukazują się dziś artykuły, które wykraczałyby poza ściśle określoną konwencję pisarską. Najbardziej typowy jej schemat nosi nazwę IMRAD. W naukach medycznych zaczął się upowszechniać w latach 50., a w latach 70. odsetek sformatowanych tak artykułów w prestiżowych pismach przekroczył 80%.
Konwencje mają swoje zalety. Osoba, która jest obeznana z formułami typu IMRAD, dzięki nim może szybko zapoznać się z treścią artykułu. Sęk w tym, że lektura takich tekstów potrafi być bardzo, bardzo nudna.
Tracą na tym również sami badacze i badaczki. Nasza praca nie powinna powodować więdnięcia mózgu. Nie powinna polegać na przedzieraniu się przez karykaturalnie nużące publikacje. I gdy trafiamy na ciekawie ułożony artykuł, widać od razu, jaki potencjał kryje się w dobrym pisarstwie naukowym.
Żadne z nas nie zmieni tego w pojedynkę. Nie nawołuję zresztą do zupełnego zniesienia akademickich konwencji. Ale trzeba ten system przynajmniej rozszczelnić. Zacząć możemy od prostego kroku: niech pierwsze zdanie artykułu zawsze zachęca (a nie zniechęca) do dalszej lektury. Niech mówi o czymś interesującym, niech będzie sprawnie napisane. I niech, na wszystkie świętości, nie zawiera siedemnastu odsyłaczy bibliograficznych.
