W „Przeglądzie Socjologicznym” ukazała się moja recenzja wartościowej książki Erica de Giera „Documentary industrial novels and the sociology of work in the twentieth century”. Autor analizuje XX-wieczne teksty literackie przedstawiające pracę w fabrykach, mówiąc rzeczy istotne zarówno dla socjologii kultury, jak i dla socjologii pracy. W Stanach Zjednoczonych Upton Sinclair przed publikacją „Grzęzawiska” (1905) spędził siedem tygodni w zakładzie mięsnym w Chicago podczas strajku. W Niemczech Egon Erwin Kirsch w „Szalejącym reporterze” (1924) przedstawił warunki zatrudnienia w fabryce w Bochum i na statku parowym Vaterland na bazie bezpośredniej obserwacji. Kiedy czytałem książkę, wróciła do mnie myśl, że cała socjologia i generalnie nauki społeczne mogłyby bardziej inspirować się literaturą. Opublikowałem już kilka tekstów w anglojęzycznych czasopismach i mam poczucie, że piszemy zbyt nudno. Wynika to z wielu przyczyn, również systemowych (mówi o tym świetna książka „Return to meaning: A social science with something to say”). Żeby ciekawiej pisać, powinniśmy i powinnyśmy na przykład czytać więcej literatury pięknej – ale żeby tak robić, musimy mieć na to czas.
